French Provincial furniture is sophisticated, yet traditional. Elegant, yet casual. Romantic, yet unfussy. The French Provence decorating style originated in the country manor homes outside of Paris in the 1800s and it remains a time-honored look, 200 plus years later...
Though it’s never gone out of fashion,
French Provincial interior design is currently a highly desirable style in homes today. It’s a beautiful way to decorate that, interestingly, follows some very basic elements.
At the core of French Provincial interior design is color. Soft, muted and neutral, French Provincial color palettes are simple and fairly silent. Warm beiges, subtle grays, creamy whites are seen often and they flow together easily. Accents of soft lavender, buttery yellow or pastel rose can be excellent complementary colors. A Provence decor color palette can be used on walls, in accessories, or on textiles.
French Provincial Living Rooms
French Provincial living rooms are luxurious, yet still comfortable and useable. Crucial to the balance of the room is a casually elegant sofa, perfectly upholstered in natural fabric in a neutral color. Ruffles are often seen in Provence decor upholstered seating options, but they are not dainty. The look is one of comfort, and not overly feminine.
Upholstered side chairs with wood elements are an outstanding complement to a sofa and throw pillows with simple details accent chairs nicely. An armoire made of rustic wood or with a distressed finish is an excellent way to add height to the room, and also to provide efficient, beautiful storage.
A
French Provincial coffee table is a key anchor to this space. Rustic wood coffee tables or oversized tufted ottomans with distressed wood legs are beautiful options. Pillows of all types in neutral fabrics are a lovely way to finish the look of the room.
French Provincial Bedrooms
French Provincial Bedroom Furniture is romantic. Begin with a
French Provincial bed, with a beautifully upholstered headboard and footboard.
Fabrics are neutral in color and natural in texture. Bedding is luxurious but simple. White duvet covers with fluffy down comforters, cozy throw blankets and a plethora of pillows make a bed irresistible.
Consider hanging a dainty chandelier above a bed to create soft light and draw the eye up in the room. Accents are muted. Vases, urns, fresh flowers, a stack of books. A true French Provincial decor bedroom is beautiful but still functional and practical.
French Provincial Dining Rooms
French Provincial Dining Room Furniture is casually elegant and welcoming. The anchor piece is a large, rustic wood French Provincial dining table, which provides the perfect space for gathering friends and family over leisurely meals.
French Provincial dining tables are constructed of solid woods and are often whitewashed or distressed. Embellishments on tables are small, but notable, with components such as gentle curves, scalloping, and dainty carvings.
French Provincial dining chairs take many forms - weathered metal chairs with cushions, caned chairs with upholstered seats, or even upholstered wing chairs with exposed distressed or whitewashed wood are all beautiful options for seating.
Lighting is important, and a graceful, timeless
French Provincial chandelier is always a reliable choice to create the perfect ambiance. The perfect accent piece is a statement mirror, hearty enough to hold its own, but with enough soft detail to make it just the perfect balance of romantic.
